Mt Difficulty

Mt Difficulty is one of Central Otago’s premier estates, producing complex, concentrated wines from wonderful old vines that showcase some of the South Island’s greatest varieties.

Situated on the famous Felton Road in Bannockburn, a unique and rare area of extremes, Mt Difficulty was established in the 1990s by a group of four growers who were true pioneers of Central Otago’s premium subregion, harnessing a difficult but beautiful terrain overlooking the southern Cromwell Basin. Here, a unique microclimate of low rainfall and humidity, with hot summers and a large diurnal temperature variation bring the best out of the fickle Pinot Noir grape, and also provide perfect growing conditions for Chenin Blanc, Pinot Gris, Riesling, and Chardonnay.

Today, under fourth generation winemaker, Matt Dicey (aka Le Grand Fromage and a 4th generation vigneron), Mt Difficulty’s wines, including their sublime single vineyard bottlings and famed Roaring Meg label, offer you the chance to taste true Kiwi pioneering spirit.
