Villa Maria Reserve Clifford Bay is a 100% Sauvignon Blanc from the Awatere Valley of Marlborough, in areas benefiting from Clifford Bay's cooling influence. Destemmed fruit was crushed and pressed before cold settling. The clear racked juice was inoculated with selected aromatic yeast strains. Cool, slow fermentation in stainless steel tanks took place to retain distinctive sub-regional and varietal characteristics. "Named after Clifford Bay, into which the Awatere River empties, this is a very classy Marlborough wine. Seddon Vineyards and the Taylors Pass Vineyard – both managed but not owned by Villa Maria – are the key sources of fruit. Handled entirely in stainless steel tanks and aged on its light yeast lees for several months, the wine typically exhibits the leap-out-of-the-glass fragrance and zingy, explosive flavour of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc at its best. The outstanding 2019 vintage (5*) is a powerful, punchy wine, with lifted, freshly herbaceous aromas. Already delicious, it is weighty and vibrant, with pure, penetrating flavours of passionfruit, lime and green capsicums, that build across the palate to a dry, lasting finish. A great buy."Michael Cooper
A classic concentrated, vibrant Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Powerful aromas of blackcurrants, wild nettles, and fresh grapefruit flow into a big, juicy mouth, with passionfruit, zesty limes, herbaceous notes of fresh rosemary, thyme, and underlying flinty minerality. Finishes long.
