Vidal was established by a young native Spanish immigrant, Anthony Joseph Vidal, way back in 1905. Vidals pioneering spirit in producing classic, elegant wines still runs through this great Hawkes Bay estate today under the current owner Sir George Fistonich. George (who is the founder and owner of Villa Maria), bought the estate in the 1970s and recently built a new winery in the Gimblett Gravels subregion on the same site as the Te Awa winery, Esk Valley and Villa Maria itself.
Joe Czerwinski (Wine Advocate - "90/100 - Vidal's 2019 Reserve Sauvignon Blanc is drawn primarily (85%) from the Wairau Valley, with the balance coming from Awatere. The Awatere lends an herbal edge to the passion fruit and tropical notes of Wairau, blending together nicely on the nose and palate. It's medium-bodied, with a touch more concentration and depth than the regular bottling, and there's a hint of creaminess to the texture and a lingering finish."
