100% Pinot Noir from the Calvert Vineyard, located on Felton Road in the Bannockburn sub-region of Central Otago.
Unique gravity flow enables fruit (approx 25% whole clusters) to be gently destemmed directly into open-top fermenters without pumping. Traditional fermentation with maceration on skins has extracted good colour and tannin with considerable depth of flavour. Aged for 16 months in French oak barrels from artisan Burgundian coopers. In accordance with Felton Road's non-interventionalist approach to winemaking, this wine was fermented with indigenous yeast and not fined or filtered.
Winemaker's Comments
As often happens with Calvert, the nose when young is slightly muted and more direct than exotic; pure and fine aromas, not bold and lush. The palate follows on accordingly, with clarity of fruit, roses and florals. Focused, concentrated yet pure in the mid-palate, with its hallmark mineral texture, it’s firm but ultimately juicy on the finish. The vines are growing up and the puppy-fat is turning to muscle!
