Esk Valley's Winemakers Reserve Merlot/Cabernet/Malbec is one of Hawke's Bay's finest reds - a complex, voluptuous Bordeaux-inspired blend from the prestigious Gimblett Gravels sub-region.
Individual parcels of grapes were harvested separately and fermented in original 1930s concrete tanks. The Winemakers Reserve was aged for 16 months in (50% new) French oak barriques before blending and bottling.
Esk Valley is a high quality Hawke's Bay winery, and with one of New Zealand's most experienced winemakers at the helm, Gordon Russell, (plus developments in the cellar and vineyard), its wines from Hawke's Bay (including the famous Gimblett Gravels) and Marlborough just keep getting better and better. An estate to watch.
4 STARS - Dish Magazine | Drinks: Tasting Panel - Merlot (Yvonne Lorkin, Jane Rowan, Cameron Douglas MS), Issue 79Judges' comments:“Nicely weighted and balanced to drink,” said Cameron, while both Jane and Yvonne were impressed with its herbal and floral-forward aromas and warm, spicy layers of flavour.
This is a full-bodied and rich Gimblett Gravels blend. Densely coloured, it has a bouquet of blackberry and cherry with subtle oak seasoning, while the palate is softly textured and generous in nature. Due to its ripened tannins, the wine can be enjoyed young but will gain further complexity with age.
