Villa Maria Cellar Selection Grenache 2016

100% Grenache from a small one hectare planting in Villa Maria's Ngakirikiri Vineyard located in the heart of the Gimblett Gravels in Hawkes Bay.

A very late-ripening variety sourced from 16-year-old vines, the fruit was hand-picked and matured for 11 months in 30% new French oak barrels of varying sizes.

Winemaker's Comments

Grenache is one of the most widely planted red varieties in the world, but is exceptionally rare in New Zealand. This Cellar Selection wine is wonderfully ripe and fragrant, overflowing with perfumed cherry, liquorice, and violet characters. Supple tannins provide a lovely rich mouthfeel; displays finesse and approachability through to its long finish.

"This is literally the only grenache being produced in New Zealand, so best you get amongst it before its all gone! Crafted from 16-year-old vines growing in the company’s Ngakirikiri Vineyard, it’s a heaving monster of a wine, rammed with floral intensity and spiced berry and cherry flavours. The alcohol is 14.5% and its heat adds an extra dimension to the texture and length of flavour. Solid tannins and bold acidity bind the smoky intensity of the wine, a wine. Gorgeous!"
