Esk Valley Verdelho 2018
100% Verdelho from Hawkes Bay. Originally a traditional and famous variety from the Portuguese island of Madeira where for many centuries it has been used in the production of fortified wine.
Fruit was harvested and gently pressed before fermentation in both tank and aged French oak barrels. The wine in barrels was fermented with indigenous yeasts and left on lees until blending and bottling. The tank ferments were cool fermented to capture the pure aromatics and flavours.
Winemaker's Comments
Esk Valley have been pioneers of this variety in New Zealand, producing a dry-style Verdelho since 2002. This is a full-bodied wine with a fresh acidity, exhibiting the exotic flavours and aromas of peach, passionfruit and mandarin.

"Verdelho the famous white grape grown on the Portuguese island of Madeira where for aeons it’s been used in the production of sherry. In 1998 the team at Esk Valley planted some in the rock star region of the Gimblett Gravels and in 2002 Gordon Russell produced the very first kiwi version. This shiny new sip is like peaches personified, laced with lemon verbena and lusciousness like you wouldn’t believe. This is one of those wines that I just want to shout “Taste this now!!” at the top of my lungs. Fresh, tropical, complex and creamy - it’s an absolute star."
