Esk Valley Terraces 2014

An iconic ultra-premium wine made only in outstanding vintages in very small amounts. A classic blend of Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Merlot from The Terraces vineyard, perched on the steep, north-west facing slope near Bay View in the north of Hawkes Bay; one of the most beautiful vineyard sites in New Zealand.

This is a true vineyard blend with the individual plots being harvested and processed together; sorted and destemmed to a 70-year-old concrete vat for fermentation. Hand plunging was employed for cap management. Aged in new French oak barriques for 18 months and given a light egg white fining prior to bottling.

Winemaker's Comments

Handcrafted with much effort to produce a wine that is a true expression of its site. Deeply coloured and full of primary black fruits, including cherry and blackberry. When young, French oak notes complement the fruit, but over time, complexity and vineyard nuances will predominate.

5 STARS & SUPER CLASSIC - Michael Cooper Buyer's Guide to NZ Wines

A FLIGHT OF TERRACES - The Buyer Magazine (Geoffrey Dean), Oct 2016
"Gordon Russell, the senior winemaker at Esk Valley in New Zealand, likes to compare the 2013 and 2014 vintages in Hawke’s Bay to 2009 and 2010 in Bordeaux. Just as the acclaim for 2009 was followed by a vintage that many felt trumped it, so Russell believes that The Terraces 2013, from a so-called ‘vintage of a lifetime’, may have been followed by an even better one in 2014."
